Catamarans rest on two widely separated, relatively narrow hulls. The sleeping accommodations are usually in the hulls, and socializing areas are in the cockpit and the area that separates the two hulls. Catamarans tend be more contemporary in appearance than monohulls. Because they are less heavy and have less hull in the water, they tend to be faster than a monohull on most points of sail. One thing that distinguishes them to most people is that they sail level, virtually no heeling. The down side for some people is that you tend to have less of a feeling for the water, you feel a little removed from it. Another wonderful feature of catamarans is called the trampoline, which is netting that is tightly strung between the two hulls on the front of the boat. This is an ideal place for reading, napping or just admiring the scenery while the boat is under way.
Catamarans have become immensely popular in recent years, displacing many traditional sailboats. To see samples of this type of boat click on Search Yachts below.
